To the Editor:
I feel the need to call to your attention the poor display of “patriotism” you chose for your front page of the May 28th issue of the Fauquier Time Democrat. The photo shows a young boy with a flag and the caption leads us to believe the child has been handed a flag by his father to celebrate Memorial Day. A closer look at the picture seems to tell a much bigger story. First, one should never stand on a grave, much less on the headstone. Second, the gesture from the father is more of a “request” for the flag than an offering. Third, it appears that this flag in question may have belonged on the right side of the headstone on which the boy is perched. I am constantly amazed at the general disrespect for the traditions of our country and the misinformation about “Memorial Day.” Once a single day of remembrance, May 30th, our country took time to reflect on our blessings and those that had laid their life down in defense of this great nation. Today, it is a three day weekend, an overwhelming number of sales, and a presidential hopeful who thinks the fallen are in the crowd listening to him. Our nation needs a swift kick and a serious civics lesson. God bless all those who have served our country, both living and dead, and may God bless America.
