Fauquier Parents can be very Proud
My wife and I attended the viewing for Edward McGee on May 20 at the Moser Funeral Home. Both of us were extremely impressed by the youngsters that attended.
It has been reported that the number of people attending was record breaking. I estimate that about 500 people showed up. There were oldsters like us. There were young children. There were friends. There were the ‘rednecks’ from Liberty High School. Also, there were many others too numerous to note or identify.
The ‘rednecks’ showed themselves proud. They consoled and counseled each other, they stayed together to honor one of their friends, and they showed great courage at a time when many would not have known what to do.
One member of this group spoke of Edward being in a better place. He stood in the back of his pick-up truck and reminded his friends that automobiles can be very dangerous vehicles. He encouraged all of them to be very, very careful each time they climbed into a vehicle. He went on to say that doing so would honor Edward. Every one of the group of ‘kids’ – although this word belies the maturity exhibited by each one – conducted themselves in such a way that would make any parent extremely proud.
These youngsters showed deference to their elders at the appropriate time. They showed leadership among their group of peers.
I spoke with many of them, and each time was convinced they are fully on the path to step forward and learn those things that will be required in leading our community, state, and nation. Their conversations were respectful, and they were good conversationalists.
Many adults don’t know that they are ‘good kids,’ but I hope this letter convinces each and every reader that we have some very mature individuals that go to Liberty High School. Also, each and every parent needs to let their child know that they are proud that they distinguished themselves at a time when the occasion dictated. I know that I am proud of them, and I don’t have any children attending the school system.
A hundred years from now it will not matter what clothes we wore, what car we drove, or how much money we made. The most important thing is whether we had a positive impact on a child. Parents, this is your opportunity. Don’t let it escape.

Thanks so much for another public comment in the recent events surrounding the impact of the loss of a great friend, Edward McGee, these kids, the "rednecks" are so AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The older folk like us need to see the inside of these hearts, I have 2 teens,(1 at Liberty High School 1 graduated), they have dealt with this so great, I think they have re-evulatated their responsibility to safe driving, and keeping in touch with their parents, and still showing Edwards family how loved he and "they" are, these kids are totally AWESOME! If you were there you know, if absent you missed a presentation by youth, that could teach all of us of a few things. Thanks for voicing your opinion thru the Fauquier Times, I know we are all still reeling from the loss, be safe on the roads and treat our teens more respect, that "redneck" is as fine as a person as you are.....
