Virginia graduation rates improve

Virginia's on-time graduation rate, that is, students who graduate within four years of entering ninth grade, rose to 88 percent in 2012. This rate increased over 7 percent since 2008, according to the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).

The dropout rate for the class of 2012 in Virginia decreased .7 percent from the class of 2011, from 7.2 percent in 2011 to 6.5 percent in 2012.

Five percent more girls graduated than boys. Over 90 percent of girls graduated compared to over 85 percent of boys.

The dropout rate for black and Hispanic students improved in the class of 2012. Almost 2 percent fewer blacks left school before graduation. The dropout rate declined from almost 11 percent to over 9 percent. The dropout rate for Hispanic students decreased from almost 15 percent to over 13 percent.
