Fauquier County Public Schools decreased energy usage per square foot by 14 percent from 2009 to 2012. Annual energy costs dropped from $3.3 million in fiscal year 2009 to $2.9 million to fiscal year 2012.
In this time period, the school division reduced rates with NOVEC and Dominion Power, decreased natural gas prices by competive purchase, got rid of unused electric meters, cut off vending machine lights, took personal appliances out of classrooms, and used centralized controls to reduce heating and air conditioning during hours where buidlings are unoccupied.
