The Highland Hawks’ girls tennis season ended Tuesday with a close loss to Norfolk Collegiate during the quarterfinals of the VISAA Division II state championships.
The fifth-seeded Hawks lost, 5-4, on the road in Norfolk to No. 4 seed Collegiate. Highland’s victories came from Nicole Brown (No. 2 singles), Aria Pahari (No. 3 singles), Finley Broaddus (No. 5 singles) and the No. 2 doubles team of Pahari and Marina Macklin.
Highland finished the season with a 7-7 record.
All-DAC boys soccer teams
Five Highland Hawks were selected for the all-Delaney Athletic Conference boys soccer teams.
Juniors Eddie Campell, Tim Bartz and Evan Finley made the first team, while sophomore Ward Van de Water and senior Alex Genove made the second teams.
The Hawks’ season ended Nov. 2 with 7-9-1 record after a 4-0 loss to Hampton Roads Academy in the quarterfinals of the VISAA Division II state tournament.
All-DAC cross country team
Four Wakefield Owls made the all-Delaney Athletic Conference cross country team by placing in the top 15 in the boys or girls races of the DAC championship meet Nov. 1.
Ali Russel, Emily Granruth and Kate Anderson made the girls team, while Ethan Mahoney and Ben Weimer made the boys team.
The Wakefield girls finished the regular season undefeated and won both the DAC and Colonial Athletic Conference championships.
Highland volleyball 3, Walsingham Academy 2
After qualifying for the state volleyball tournament for the third consecutive season, the Highland Hawks won a quarterfinal match for the second time in their history Tuesday.
Highland defeated Walsingham Academy, 25-14, 20-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-12, in the quarterfinals of the VISAA Division II state tournament at home in Warrenton. So the Hawks (15-7) will face Nansemond Suffolk during the semifinals Friday in Richmond and try to return to the state championship game, in which they lost to Cape Henry Collegiate, 3-1, last season.
