Monticello ends Fauquier’s season, 44-14

James Madison University-bound quarterback Jhalil Mosley and his Monticello teammates made a myriad of big plays in ending one of the finest Fauquier seasons in recent memory Friday night.
Led by Mosley’s four touchdown passes and Willie James’ 84-yard interception return for the game’s first score, the host Mustangs overwhelmed the Falcons 44-14 in the Division 3 Region II quarterfinals in Charlottesville.
Despite the lopsided defeat, Fauquier quarterback Colin Diehl completed 29 of 44 passes for 266 yards, including a whopping eight completions each to Wesley Olinger and Spicer Sabruno and seven to Leif Heltzel.
But all that passing wasn’t enough to overcome a host of key mistakes, including two key interceptions by Diehl that led to two Mustang touchdowns, and a disastrous stretch right before that half that saw Monticello score 16 points in the last 1:33 to take a 30-7 halftime edge.
“In the first half I did not see the field right,” said Diehl, explaining his misreads on the two interceptions. “In the second half I tried to play like it’s my last game.”
Fauquier coach Jamie Carter called his team’s play uncharacteristic of their 7-4 season and proudly hailed the year a major success. He said the Falcons nearly came close to three key goals: sweeping both county rivals, winning the district and hosting a home game. “We almost did all three, I’m excited how far we’ve come,” he said.
