Despite four goals each from Shelby Sipes and Emily Granruth, the Wakefield Owls began the 2013 girls lacrosse season Friday with a 12-10 loss to Trinity Christian at home in The Plains.
Wakefield took a 2-0 lead early, but fell behind by halftime, 9-4. The Owls went on a 6-3 run in the second half, but fell short of victory. Sarah Steenson and Katie Clifford also scored for Wakefield, while Sipes had one assist. Goalie Alysaa Ortiz had 18 saves.
Fauquier softball 5, Skyline 0
The Fauquier Falcons improved their softball record to 3-0 Friday with 5-0 victory over the Skyline Hawks at home in Warrenton.
Tess Miller picked up her second victory of the season by allowing only three hits while striking out seven over seven innings in the shutout. The Fauquier offense benefited from eight hits and seven Skyline errors.
Fauquier took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Ashley Brown scored on a passed ball after two Skyline errors. The Falcons expanded that advantage to 2-0 in the third inning with a Kaitlyn Reid RBI-single after a Skyline error.
In the fourth inning, Fauquier increased its lead to 4-0 thanks to two errors and two singles, and it finished the scoring with an RBI-single by Reid in the fifth inning. Reid went 3-for-4 on the day, while Chrissy Bruno went 1-for-1 with one run and a stolen base, Brown had two runs and an RBI, and Elizabeth Wilcox had two stolen bases.
Wakefield boys tennis 6, Jefferson 1
The Wakefield Owls won their second consecutive boys tennis match Friday and improved their record to 2-1 with a 6-1 victory over Jefferson on the road in Alexandria.
In singles action, No. 1 Gabe Himelfarb won 8-1, No. 2 Harwood Wolfson won 8-4 and No. 3 Juan Lizarrage won 8-1, while Daniel Lizarrage lost 8-4. In double play, the No. 1 team of Himelfarb and Wolfson won 8-4, while the No. 2 Lizarraga brothers won 8-3, and the No. 3 team of Anthony Del Rosso and Josh Mahoney won 8-4.
Kettle Run softball 9, Stonewall 0
The Kettle Run Cougars shut out the Stonewall Jackson softball team, 9-0, Friday at home in Nokesville to improve their record to 3-1.
Kettle Run took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, a 5-0 advantage in the third and an 8-0 lead in the fourth en route to the convincing victory. Junior pitcher Kaitlin Munda won via shutout after striking out 10 while allowing eight hits.
Munda also led the Kettle Run offense with three runs and an RBI on 3-for-3 hitting, while freshman Debbie Stuart went 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI, and sophomore Forrest Poland went 1-for-2 with two RBI. Michelle Farmer added two runs and a stolen base on 2-for-4 hitting, while sophomore Shelby Stegmaier went 1-for-4 with two RBI.
