The Kettle Run Cougars opened their 2013 softball season Wednesday with a 4-2 victory on the road over Spotsylvania.
The Cougars scored four runs in the top of the first inning and then junior pitcher Kaitlin Munda held Spotsylvania scoreless until the fifth. Over seven innings, Munda struck out four and allowed five hits and five walks.
Kettle Run’s offense used six hits and three errors to top Spotsylvania with freshman third baseman Debbie Stuart going 3-for-4. Sophomore second baseman Forrest Poland had one run and one RBI, while sophomore catcher Shelby Stegmaier had one RBI on a double.
Fauquier softball 14, Skyline 4

In the Fauquier Falcons’ first game since that four-year starting pitcher graduated, they beat the Skyline softball team, 14-4, on the road in Front Royal. Tess Miller picked up the victory by allowing only two runs on three hits and two walks over four innings in a game won via 10-run rule after five innings.
Fauquier took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, a 7-0 advantage in the top of the third and a 9-0 lead in the top of the fourth before Skyline scored two runs in the bottom of that inning. The Falcons countered by scoring five runs in the top of the fifth to take a 14-2 lead.
They finished with nine hits, two each from Apryl Nalls, Ashley Brown and Kaitlyn Reid. Nalls went 2-for-2 with three runs and four RBI, while Brown went 2-for-2 with three runs and a stolen base, and Reid went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. Justina Augustine added three runs and three stolen bases on 1-for-3 hitting, while Katie Manson had two RBI and Elizabeth Wilcox had three stolen bases.
Fauquier and Kettle Run boys tennis
The Kettle Run Cougars began the 2013 boys tennis season Wednesday with a 6-3 loss to Tuscarora at home in Nokesville.
Kettle Run No. 1 Chase Rathbone won 8-4, while No. 5 Andrew Rainger won 9-7 and No. 6 Luke Schwenke won 9-8 (7-4). The Cougars, however, narrowly lost three other matches by two points each, leading to the Tuscarora dual win.
Meanwhile, the Fauquier Falcons improved their record to 2-0 this season with an 8-1 victory over Skyline on the road in Front Royal. Fauquier previously opened the season Monday with a 7-2 win against Courtland on the road in Spotsylvania.
Freedom girls soccer 2, Kettle Run 0
The Kettle Run Cougars’ girls soccer season began Wednesday with a 2-0 loss to Freedom on the road in South Riding.
