January unemployment for Fauquier rises to 5.1 percent
The unemployment rate in Fauquier County rose to 5.1 percent in January, according to preliminary figures from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics.
In December, the BLS recorded an unemployment rate of 4.3 percent for the county, again a preliminary figure. That month, Fauquier County had a total labor force of 37,838, 1,621 of whom were unemployed. In January, the labor force contracted to 36,384, while the unemployment figure rose to 1,843.
The figures do not reflect the effects of federal budget sequestration, which went into effect at the beginning of March.
Fauquier County has historically enjoyed a low unemployment rate relative to the rest of Virginia, benefitting from jobs readily available in and around the Beltway. Unemployment in Fauquier climbed to a record 6.9 percent in January 2010, and has roughly declined in the months since. January's preliminary figures are the highest since February 2012, when the BLS also listed Fauquier's unemployment rate at 5.1 percent.
