The end-of-season college basketball awards keep rolling in for players once groomed in Fauquier County.

James Madison’s Jazmon Gwathmey, a 2011 Liberty High graduate, added her name to the list Wednesday when she was named to the Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball all-Rookie team. Former Liberty teammate Liz Wood won the America East Conference Rookie of the Year award last week while 2009 Fauquier High graduate Jerrelle Benimon was named the CAA men’s basketball Player of the Year.

Gwathmey, a 6-foot-2 redshirt, led CAA freshman during conference play with 5.7 rebounds and .7 blocked shots per game as well as a 46.5 field goal percentage. She came on strong at the end of the season to help the Dukes lock up the No. 2 seed in the upcoming CAA tournament.

Gwathmey started James Madison’s final nine games (15 starts overall) and played in all 30 games en route to a 21-9 record for the Dukes. She won the CAA Rookie of the Week award for the week ending March 10 and finished the season with averages of 6.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, .7 blocks and .7 assists as well as a .425 field goal percentage.

Her Dukes teammate, Precious Hall, also made the all-Rookie team and was named CAA Rookie of the Year, while James Madison’s Kirby Burkholder and Tarik Hislop made the all-CAA first team.

JMU will next play March 15 in the CAA tournament quarterfinals against Towson at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md.
