Former Sheriff Ashby W. Olinger dies

Saturday, Jan. 19 | By Mark Grandstaff
Ashby W. Olinger, 1948-2013
Former Sheriff Ashby W. Olinger died Friday night at his home in Fauquier County after a brief illness.

Olinger joined the sheriff’s office in January of 1968, at a time when the department only had seven deputies and four dispatchers. He was eventually elected sheriff in November of 1983, and served two terms from January 1984 to 1991.

"Even in retirement Ashby was a friend to the sheriff’s office family and was seen around the office from time to time," said sheriff Charlie Ray Fox Jr. in a release. "He will be greatly missed."

The sheriff's office will release more details soon.
