First-graders at Greenville Elementary School perform 100 acts of kindness

Greenville Elementary School first-graders did 100 acts of kindness during Random Acts of Kindness Week, Feb. 11 to Feb 15,

Led by their teacher Linda Hume, the students got ready starting on Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday on Jan. 16 and continuing until the 100th day of school, Feb. 5.

On the first day, they placed 46 door hangers saying "Make it a wonderful day" around school. They also made cards saying "I love you" for their parents.

Gifts, letter and cards defined the second day. The first-graders hid 150 "kindness" cards they decorated in books in the library. They gave coffee shop gift cards to four lunch and recess monitors, handed books of thank you notes to the librarians and art teacher, and, in secret, left pencils and erasors for their third grade reading partners.

On the third day, the students gave a book of thank you notes to the computer lab teacher, gave cards with lottery tickets to the principals, clinic aide and secretaries, and put a card with chocolate candy in each teacher's mailbox.

Six cafeteria workers received water bottles, chocolate and cards on the fourth day. Students delivered chocolate, hot chocolate mix, granola bars and cards to the four custodians. The music teacher received a book of thank you notes.

On the last day, the students gave boxes of crayons to Greenville's six preschool students. They made 17 no-sew fleece blankets for sick children at the Ronald McDonald House. Hume wrapped the blankets with ribbons and attached a heart and a note of kindness to each.
