The Highland Hawks’ girls basketball season ended Wednesday with a 69-48 loss to Hampton Roads on the road in Newport News during the quarterfinals of the VISAA Division II state tournament.

The No. 6-seeded Hawks finished with a 14-8 record, while No. 3 Hampton advanced to play No. 2 Williamsburg Christian in the semifinals Friday at Wakefield in The Plains.

Highland lost to Hampton Roads Academy despite a season-best performance by Mackenzie Ross, a senior. Ross finished with 22 points, eight rebounds and three blocks as she tried to lead the Hawks out of a first-quarter hole.

Lauren Frye added seven points, while Michele Micciche and Jessica Shaw had six each.

Highland made it to the quarterfinals by beating No. 11 Walsingham Academy in the first round, 49-38. Shaw led the Hawks with 15 points, while Micciche had 14, Ross had eight and Frye had 6. Frye and Ross also had eight rebounds each, while Micciche had seven steals.

Walsingham won the 2005-06 and 2006-07 D-II state titles by beating Highland in the finals, and also won the championship in 2004-05 and 2007-08.
