The Wakefield Owls rallied from an 11-point deficit in the first half to beat Fredericksburg Christian, 65-47, Thursday in the semifinals of the Delaney Athletic Conference Division I girls basketball tournament at Highland in Warrenton.
Wakefield, the No. 2 seed, advanced to play the No. 4 Highland Hawks in the DAC final Saturday at 5 p.m. in Warrenton. Highland defeated No. 1 Seton, 40-36, in the semifinals Thursday.
The Owls, ranked No. 2 in the latest VISAA Division 3 poll, also improved their record to 22-6 despite trailing Fredericksburg Christian, 26-21, at halftime. They tied the score, 41-all, by the end of the third quarter and then outscored third-seeded Fredericksburg, 24-6, in the fourth.
Kelly Mason led Wakefield with 23 points on 3-for-4 3-point shooting, while Emily Granruth had 22 points and Alexis Smith had 10. Granruth also had 12 points, two blocks and eight of the Owls’ 19 steals. Smith had five steals and two assists, while Mason had six rebounds and Airielle Jenkins had five rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Highland, meanwhile, used aggressive defensive pressure against Seton to build a 25-10 lead at halftime. Seton tied the score by the end of the third quarter, but the Hawks (13-6 record) forced more turnovers in the fourth to pull the upset.
Lauren Frye led Highland with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Jessica Shaw had nine points and four assists, and Shelby Thornhill added seven points and four steals.
The Hawks, ranked No. 8 in the latest VISAA Division II poll, improved their record to 13-6 record and advanced to play Wakefield for the third time this season.
Wakefield beat the Hawks twice in the past month, 45-43 in The Plains on Jan. 26 and 59-49 in Warrenton on Feb. 11.
