Against Fauquier, Western Albemarle took a 23-15 lead by the end of the first quarter and a 37-23 halftime lead before holding on to win by outscoring the Falcons 25-23 in the third period and 27-26 in the fourth.

Monticello girls basketball 74, Kettle Run 33

The Kettle Run Cougars’ season ended with a 7-16 record Tuesday after losing to the Monticello girls basketball team, 74-33, on the road in Charlottesville during the quarterfinals of the Region II Division 3 tournament. By beating the eighth-seeded Cougars, No. 1 Monticello advanced to play No. 5 Heritage in the semifinals Thursday.

“Monticello was too fast for us and shot the ball extremely well,” Cougars coach Sarah Ventresco said. “The girls didn't give up and played hard. We've reached a lot of milestones this year as a program and I'm proud of the girls."

Melissa McCann led Kettle Run with nine points, while Emily Yergin had eight and Courtney Clatterbuck had five.

Woodgrove girls basketball 72, Liberty 13

For the first time since the 2008-09 season, the Liberty Eagles did not advance to the Group AA girls basketball state tournament.

Liberty lost in the Region II Division 4 tournament quarterfinals Tuesday, 72-13, ending its season with a 9-14 record. No. 1-seeded Woodgrove defeated the No. 8 Eagles to advance to the semifinals, where it will play No. 4 Millbrook on Thursday.

Last season, Liberty won its first region championship in history and advance to the AA D-3 state final, where it lost to R. E. Lee, 44-37. The Eagles won the 2010-11 AA D-4 state championship over Loudoun County, 68-55, and lost in the 2009-10 AA state quarterfinals to York, 63-60.
