75 YEARS AGO - Feb. 10, 1937
J. William Rhodes has purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Edwin B. King a lot located on the new U.S. 211 and U.S. 15 between the Bethel and Waterloo roads. The lot adjoins “Broadview” the estate of Alexander Hagner. Mr. Rhodes has contracted with W.E Ritchie to build a house on the lot.
Mrs. R. Beverley Herbert of Columbia, S.C., has been the guest of Mrs. J.H.C. Beverley at “Selby,” The Plains for a few days.
50 YEARS AGO - Feb. 8, 1962
More than 100 skiing enthusiasts converged on 12 acres of north-facing slopes near Washington, Va., for the opening of the Skyline Ski Club facility. A large lodge is under construction. Frank Louckes is president of the private corporation that is developing the recreation area.
Wheatley, 474-acre farm, has been sold by Dr. and Mrs. Robert Ferneyhough to James A Rollison of Manassas.
The board of zoning appeals Thursday approved the application of J.J. Stribling to locate a repair garage nine-tenths of a mile south of Morrisville on U.S. 17.
25 YEARS AGO - Feb. 12, 1987
The House of Delegates spending plan for 1987 earmarks $25,000 during the next fiscal year for the Old jail in Warrenton. The Old Jail compound, comprised of two buildings and a walled exercise yard, has been a part of Warrenton’s courthouse square for 178 years. The jail was used to house prisoners until 1964 when the sheriff’s office at 50 Lee St., was built.
A special concert will be held on Valentine’s Day to honor the late Carroll Payne, an agriculture teacher and Future Farmers of America sponsor at Warrenton and Cedar-Lee junior high schools. The Young Dominion, a 4-H performing arts group, will sponsor the concert and a dinner at 6:30 p.m.
