Emily Berg isn’t the best forecaster.
She swept her No. 1 singles match Thursday to give the Highland Hawks an early lead over the Foxcroft girls tennis team. They appeared poised to easily win the dual behind Berg’s dominance. Highland, however, didn’t win another match and lost the dual, 6-1, at home in Warrenton.
Similarly, on Tuesday, Berg lost her No. 1 match against Wakefield, but the Hawks ended up winning the dual.
Against Foxcroft, Berg quickly defeated Amalia Simpson, 8-0. No. 4 Marina Macklin followed by falling to Foxcroft’s Mary Marshall Pierce, 8-5. Nonetheless Highland’s No. 2 and 3 singles players led their matches at that time so the Hawks (1-1 overall, 1-1 Delaney Athletic Conference) still appeared in control.
However, Foxcroft No. 2 Annie Mickum rallied from a 6-5 deficit to beat Nicole Brown, 9-7, and Foxcroft No. 3 Kelly Buckland overcame and even larger deficit, 5-2, to beat Aria Pahari, 9-7.
No. 5 Linda Yang added an 8-3 victory over Highland’s Camille LaBanche. In doubles action, Simpson and Buckland beat Berg and Brown, 8-3, while Mickum and Pierce beat Pahari and Mickum, 8-4.
