The Wakefield Owls improved their record to 2-0 this girls basketball season with a 36-30 victory over Maryvale Prep (Brooklandville, Md.) on Saturday during the Mid-Atlantic Invitational at St. Timothy's School in Stevenson, Md.

Wakefield rallied from a 9-5 deficit at the end of the first quarter to tie the game, 14-all, at halftime. It then finished the third quarter with a 24-20 lead and won despite a shooting 21 percent from the field.

Emily Granruth led the Owls with 14 points, while Airielle Jenkins had eight and Alexis Smith had seven. Granruth also finished with six rebounds, three steals and a block, while Jenkins had eight steals and Kelly Mason had three steals and six rebounds.

Fauquier wrestling 6th at Elite Opener

The Fauquier Falcons placed sixth out of 12 teams Saturday in the Elite Opener round-robin dual tournament at Skyline High in Front Royal.

Fauquier scored 240 points, while winner Colonial Forge finished with 448.

Max Strum led the Falcons by finishing first with a 5-0 record at 182 pounds. Daniel Ariola (3-1 record) and Matt Raines (4-1) placed second at 113 pounds and 132 pounds, while Michael Villalobos went 3-2 at 145 pounds and took third.

Caleb Strum (106 pounds), Garrett Tingen (126) and Trevor Marable (138) each finished with 3-2 records, but did not place, while Justin Sanker (285) went 1-3, Jake Hilleary (120) and Andrew Smith (152) went 1-4, and Erik Lemus went 0-4.

In the champion pool, Strum beat Franklin County’s Derick Kromer, 4-0, and then defeated Zack Martinez of Colonial Forge, 4-3. Martinez entered the tournament ranked No. 1 in Group AAA. Fauquier is a AA team.

Ariola beat Franklin County’s Drew Holden, 8-0, but then lost to Colonial Forge’s Bryce Gentry, 2-0. Raines defeated Mussleman’s Kody Kernan, 6-4, in overtime, but then lost to Washington’s Tyler Cross, 1-0.

Highland girls basketball 32, Charlottesville 27

The Highland Hawks improved their record to 4-0 this girls basketball season with a 32-27 victory Saturday over Tandem Friends to win the Highland Invitational tip-off tournament championship in Warrenton.

Senior Jessica Shaw and junior Shelby Thornhill were named co-MVPs of the tournament, and freshman Kendall Mayer made the all-tournament team.

Highland also beat Christ Chapel Academy, 36-24, in the tournament Thursday. Previously, the Hawks beat Fredericksburg Academy, 30-23, Nov. 27 and Shenandoah Valley, 55-11, Nov. 19.

Fluvanna boys basketball 67, Liberty 51

The Liberty Eagles hung with the Fluvanna boys basketball team for 16 minutes, but eventually lost, 67-51, Saturday on the road in Palmyra.

After entering halftime in a 28-all tie, Fluvanna went on a 23-12 run in the fourth quarter to beat the Eagles (1-2).

Xavier Colbert led all scorers with 19 points, while Aaron Patterson had 16 and C.J. Lindsay had 10.
