For the second consecutive season, the Wakefield Owls took on a Fauquier County Public Schools girls basketball team.
The private school won this time. Wakefield defeated the Fauquier Falcons, 58-30, Wednesday on the road in Warrenton.
Last season, the Owls faced a much tougher FCPS opponent in the defending state champion Liberty Eagles, and despite an impressive defensive effort they lost, 46-31.
They were never in danger of losing Wednesday after taking an 11-8 lead in the first quarter and a 34-15 advantage at halftime. Wakefield (6-3) added a 17-6 run in the third quarter to seal the win.
Kelly Mason led the Owls with 16 points thanks to three 3-pointers, while Emily Granruth had 14, Alexis Smith had 10 and Airielle Jenkins had eight.
