The Greater Washington Reading Council selected Brooks Spencer as the Reading Teacher of the Year. Spencer will rceive the award Nov. 1 at the council's fall conference.

Spencer is a reading specialist at Cedar Lee Middle School. She began teaching there in 2009.

Spencer's students have yet to read an entire book on their own. Spencer reads along with them and teaches strategies like predicting, identifying character qualities, inferring and asking questions. She looks for literature that will quickly engage the students.
