The website includes information on library services, details on book clubs and discussion groups, and program news for children, teens and adults.

Other website features include an e-mail reference service and links to magazine and newspaper articles and other online resources, including specialized web pages on health, legal, business, historical and genealogical materials.

Library card

There are two ways to register for a library card: 1) apply online, or 2) pick up an application form at any library location and bring the completed application to the library with identification showing your current address.

There is no charge for Fauquier County residents, property owners, students and persons employed in Fauquier County. Also, there is no charge for non-county residents who have identification with a current address and live in a city or county that has a reciprocal borrowing agreement with Fauquier County Public Library. See the library's website for more details and for a list of partner libraries.

Materials

The library offers a wide variety of informational and recreational reading materials for all ages in a variety of formats, including eBooks and eAudio books, DVDs, books on CD, and more than 350 popular and specialized magazines.

Services

Meeting Rooms for large and small events
The library has two community meeting rooms available for public use for a fee. A reservation form and in-depth details on the rooms is available on the library's website or by calling (540) 422-8500, but basic information on the rooms follows.

The upstairs portion of the gracefully columned John Barton Payne Building
2 Courthouse Square, Old Town Warrenton, lends itself to hosting a variety of events. Judge John Barton Payne, former United States Secretary of the Interior under President Woodrow Wilson, donated funds in 1922 to construct this building, the first permanent home for the Warrenton Library. A large conference table and chairs sit below an elegant oil painting of Judge Payne by renowned figure painter Gari Melchers.

The Bealeton Depot
Located adjacent to the Bealeton Library, was built in 1905 and restored in late 2010. It includes a charming 800-square-foot room that is well suited to meetings or festive occasions. A drop-down screen and laptop-ready projector are practical additions to this historic space.

Here is a small sampling of other special services the library provides:

  • Free Wi Fi access
  • Free public-use computers with Internet access, and Microsoft applications -- Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with your library card or photo ID
  • Ask-a-Librarian, an e-mail reference service
  • The Virginiana Room, located in the Warrenton Library, has an extensive collection of materials focusing on state and local history and genealogical research
  • Access to magazine and journal articles using your library card online 24/7
  • English-as-a-second-language classes co-sponsored by Literacy Volunteers of Fauquier County. Call (540) 349-8142 for details.

Programs

The library offers programs for children, teens and adults at all three library branches throughout the year. Below is a sampling of ongoing programs. See the library's website for a full listing of programs and special events or, for general program questions, call (540) 422-8500.

  • Book clubs. All Fauquier libraries have book discussion groups that meet on a regular basis. New members are always welcome.
  • Friends of Film. A group for people who are interested in viewing and discussing films of all kinds, from silent movies of old to the latest thrillers. The group meets once a month at the Warrenton Library. Light snacks and beverages are provided. Call Jeanne Day, (540) 422-8505, for current film and discussion topics.
  • Socrates Cafe. A group of adults who have open and honest discussions on society and issues meets at 7:30 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at the Warrenton Library.
  • History and genealogy programs. The library hosts programs throughout the year on local history and genealogy led by a variety of historians and guest speakers.
  • Youth programs. The library's philosophy is that the quality of life can be improved for any child who learns to read early and continues to enjoy a lifelong love of reading. To this end, story times and special programs for children and teens are offered year-round. Summer reading programs are developed with the idea that children and teens who read during the summer months get a jump ahead of their non-reading peers when they return to school each fall. Summer reading programs are designed to give children and teens incentive to read during their summer vacations and to give parents ideas and materials for reading to their younger children.

Supporting the Library

The library welcomes donations from individuals, businesses and organizations to support its mission to provide resources and programs to inform, enrich, and entertain everyone in the community.

Donors' generosity benefits many people for years to come.

Throughout the year the library's Love My Library promotional campaign will highlight various ways to support the library. Call Collection Development Manager Fran Burke-Urr, (540) 422-8504, if you have a question about donations or need more information.

There are opportunities at all three library locations and volunteer hours vary according to department and responsibility.

Adults and teens, 13 or older, work year-round, with the teen volunteers playing an especially important role during the library's summer reading programs.

Volunteers usually work two to six hours a week. To become a library volunteer, call Lynn Hawkins, (540) 422-8507, or complete an online application and you will be contacted by the library's volunteer coordinator.

The Library Board of Trustees

Each member of the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors appoints a library board member from his or her district to represent constituents for a four-year term.

Service on the library board is strictly voluntary; members receive no salary, but are reimbursed for expenses from library funds.
