Pew Study Revealed 60% of Mothers Preferred Part-Time Work to Full-Time or No Job at All
Recently I came across a July 12, 2007 Washington Post article titled “Part-Time Looks Fine To Working Mothers” where in a research study done by Pew Research Center, 60% of mothers preferred part-time work to full-time or no job at all. The Pew findings were based on a nationally representative survey of 414 mothers that was done as part of a larger study on marriage and children.
The study also asked how mothers viewed their own parenting and discovered that only 28 percent of the mothers surveyed who worked full time gave themselves the highest rating as a parent while 41 percent of mothers working part time and 43 percent of stay-at-home mothers rated themselves top marks.
In another comparison, mothers with college degrees did not rate themselves as highly as those with some time in college and mothers with a high school education or less gave themselves the highest scores.
I wondered how the current recession and massive layoffs may have affected some Moms in the study. Are part-time or non-working mothers now unhappily working full-time to try and make ends meet? Are laid off Dads now at home with the kids? Are any of the full-time working Moms currently stay-at-home due to having been laid off? Are they enjoying it? Do any regret not having furthered their education after many months of trying to land a job in this dire and shrinking job market?
As a working or stay-at-home mom, how has the current economic conditions affected you and your parenting? What are your thoughts on the Pew study? I’d love to hear your comments.
