A Republicn's Healthcare Chutzpah

Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) re-defined gall last night with his “You lie!” outburst during President Obama’s health care reform speech. Some might say it was simply a complete absence of self-awareness behind his straight-faced exercise in incivility, but given the months of shameless, bald-faced lies from his own Republican (There will be death panels!) Party, I’ll put my money on well practiced self-discipline.

Either way, it was a culmination of a long demonstration of the Republican Party's willingness to shout down the proponents of healthcare reform when it's not resorting to misdirection and outright lies to stop healthcare reform.  But why?  If reform will be to our detriment, why not simply rely on the facts instead this torrent of distortion and dissembling?

They lie because the Republican leadership’s opposition to healthcare reform has little to do with the health and wellbeing of American citizens. Their admitted goal, as Sen. Jim DeMint, (R-SC) put it, is to “break” the president so they can get back to the business of harnessing big government for the benefit of the looting classes.  The welfare of ordinary Americans is simply not a concern.
