20th Century Lincoln
Hillary Clinton got herself into hot water the other day by saying that Lyndon Johnson was responsible for the civil rights advances of the ‘60’s. A lot of people think Martin Luther King Jr. alone deserves the dredit.
The truth is that King and Johnson colluded, literally. Johnson urged King to continue with his peaceful protests because they would elicit the public sympathy and support Johnson would need to pass his landmark civil rights legislation.
Today King has the holiday he rightly deserves, but Johnson, who did more for civil rights than any president save Lincoln, remains one of the unsung hero’s of the 20th century. I hope that one day, history recognizes him for the good this great president did.
