The Old Town 4th of July parade

Kids grow up. They go from car seats to booster seats. They lose the diapers and tie their own shoes. And somewhere along the line their parents stop marching WITH them in the Warrenton Old Town 4th of July Children and Pet Parade and rush ahead to stand at the sidelines and clap.

As always, there were far more marchers than observers. This year, we clapped. Our son, in Boy Scout uniform alongside his den, marched with dignity.

The colors were patriotic, the dogs were flamboyant, and the children were irrationally exuberant as always. The weather this year was perfect, and the band on the courthouse steps was wonderful and the bagpipe band bringing up the end arrived in dramatic flourish. Balloons, streamers, bikes, costumes and a visit from a tall and in character Uncle Sam. You couldn't contrive the scene on a movie set any better than Old Town does it naturally.
