Signs of Spring

We first appeared like jonquils, too early for real summer, but impatient for winter to end: The neighbors.

It was that kind of winter, where the over the fence chats and the grocery unloading waves just didn't happen. On one side an unseen pregnancy is now a soon to be blessed event. On the other: a formerly swaddled infant is on his feet.

In my tiny pond behind the house, there has been whoopie going on: there are baby fish. I have heard foxes in their spring wooing. One day I see a groundhog, the next day a snake.

Across the way, since the fall, chemotherapy has taken a head of hair but a young mother is beating cancer.

Families have split, some have left, others have made new homes here.

Dog walking season has our dogs in a frenzy, leaving us apologizing to every passerby for the fuss.

A long, wet season. But we're all coming out, the wiser, again to the front lawns and porches of Old Town.
