The Cookies at Fauquier Hospital
In Fauquier County we all have our own favorite places. There are Ben and Mary people, Panera people. We don't all attend the same church, we don't use the same supermarket. Some people attend Evening Under the Stars, others do their star-gazing at Crockett Park.But we do all share one place: Fauquier Hospital.
I just came home from a morning at the hospital. The greeter at the front desk remembered my name from the newspaper. My husband ran into a dear friend we rarely see and they swapped tales. The nurse and I shared tips on teens, and we saw familiar faces everywhere we went.
This is what a regional hospital means. If you live here long enough, you know people, they know you, and we all end up at the hospital sometime. That's good when you need some familiarity and comfort right before they put you out. It's a little inconvenient when you catch sight of a neighbor only half into those little robes.
My little procedure went quickly and uneventfully. The staff made me feel comfortable and the volunteers made me feel taken care of.
And when the papers were signed and they released me they also gave me a delicious Oatmeal Raison cookie.
"It's just something we do," the nurse said.
That cookie is what I think I'll remember about my morning at Fauquier Hospital. Well, that and the neighbor's robe!
I've read a lot about Fauquier Hospital's "patient-centered" care. It's easy to be skeptical of such claims, but Fauquier Hospital truly has transformed itself into a completely patient focused facility.
I have had reason to see the hospital's new vision in action on several occasions, and have been universally impressed.
Recently I took a friend to the hospital. He had to have a colonoscopy, which is a thoroughly disagreeable procedure.
Hospital staff made the experience as positive as it could be.
From a patient's point of view -- it's an exceptional place.
