Fauquier Tax Payers And Services Hit Hardest!
As state and local governments brace for the next 1 – 5 years budgets and projections a stark and startling story reveals itself blatantly. The government’s revenue stream has always started with the “tax payer,” and that tributary is “flowing slowly.”
Businesses and people contribute to the “government’s” income. In most counties, sales tax and real estate tax are the primary sources of income. An example of a business’s contribution to the tax base may come from a sales tax of an extra penny or two paid by the consumer for items purchased within a given county and the business and income tax paid by the business to the local government. An example of the “people’s” contribution comes from consuming items within a given county, and paying real estate taxes.
There’s the rub.
In most of the Northern Virginia Metropolitan Area, the revenue generated by businesses to the local governments makes up a substantial portion of a county’s budget. In Fairfax County, approximately 82% of the county budget comes from revenue generated from the business sector. In Fauquier County that figure is less than 15%.
Services and real estate taxes in Fauquier County will be going in opposite directions, one downward, and the other up. Fauquier’s lack of planning and placing of the proper infrastructure to support business activities within the county will only cost its residents. With the costs of items escalating all around us, real estate taxes will show the highest rate of inflation over the next 1 – 5 years. A 20% increase in real estate taxes per year should be expected; there is very little business in Fauquier because “Fauquier is Business Friendly,” they just don’t want to give you the zoning, or water, or sewer you will need to do business in Fauquier.
The local government has laid the groundwork for the wealthy, damn the average citizen. Oh, I forgot, we still have all that revenue generated by the cows and horses. They must generate an income stream to the county because many of their owners get a tax credit every year on their real estate taxes being based on agricultural usages.
Let the homeowners pay the taxes.
