Skunks in the suburbs

The other night I went out on the town. I turned the switch from ‘Mommy’ to ‘carefree adult’. I put on a light blue summer dress, some heels and actually did my hair to go out to belated birthday dinner with one of my best friends.

The night was great, dinner and drinks in the city at a place called Vegetate and conversation that did not consist of changing diapers and Power Rangers.

After an adventurous ride home on the metro, luckily catching the last train out, my friend dropped me off at home around 12:30 a.m. I was ready to call it a night.

I walked in to see my husband sitting at the dining room table finishing up some work, and said I was going to take the dogs out and head to bed. Little did I know that was not going to fit into the plan of a certain skunk that has been lurking around in our neighborhood.

At first I was just going to walk them out front, but our one dog, Cleo (a four-year-old black Lab) decided that she wanted a walk -- and if a 95 lb. dog wants to go somewhere, you usually have to follow -- so I started to walk them around the block.

We got about half way when my other dog, Sydney (five-year-old shepherd mix) started to go after something under a car. Squirrel? No. Cat? I wish. Skunk? You could smell it right away.

She was sprayed!!!!

I decide to cut the walk short after that and head home, only to find myself (still in my dress and heels) out front at 1:30 in the morning rubbing tomato paste into my dog (we didn’t have any tomato soup or hydrogen peroxide and baking soda), then spraying her off with a hose and repeating the whole process.

After all the effort, my dog still stinks and where ever she has white hair, it is now a little pink! I have decided for the time being to change her name to Pepe le Pew! (She doesn’t like that very much!)

Awww Lynn your poor dog!!!! :) That is slightly funny though ;)

That story reminded me of my dog Scoobie, my husband, and a stray cat ( that turned out to be a raccoon.) During the struggle between my dog and the raccoon, my husband right in the mix trying to separate them comes up with the raccoon by the tail and flips it over the upper deck to the ground below..I was horrified!! Did the smell get in your clothes??? Stinky or not I'm glad your dog is OK for the most part!!
