Marketplace Ministry?

BY LARA MOODY

Marketplace Ministry. Hmmm. Ahem. Well. Sigh. Marketplace Ministry? What in heaven's name is marketplace ministry? I keep hearing the term, and I sense it's becoming big. Maybe it already was. Perhaps now we simply have a name for it. So what exactly is it?  If your work is in the marketplace, if you think you are not a minister, think again. If you are a believer and God has set you in a niche in the marketplace, do not forget to minister. Minister? Yes. Actually, to minister means to serve!

If you have dedicated your life to Jesus Christ, please do not for a minute restrict your faith walk to your church, to your home, to your family. Do not forget the marketplace!  If you live in Virginia and want to become a part of the action, check out the prayer groups sprouting up town by town. Interdenominational. Public and pastors. All for Christ. Many are ministers in the marketplace.

Let me give you an example. I grew up not liking dogs much. I loved mine, but quite frankly I neglected her. God had big plans. In making amends for past wrong behavior, I rescued a dog run over, badly. Nobody knew what to do. They stood in the street. I picked up the dog, let it bleed in my arms, handed my keys to a strange man, hopped in the back of my car, and off I went to the vet.  Over a decade later now, I not only am founder and director of yet another animal rescue organization. This time, I have dedicated my work to Christ. Anyone who reads my articles in The Purcellville Gazette or runs across me in adopting a dog, making a donation or anything whatsoever knows quickly my number one passion is Jesus Christ.

Just last week, a woman was put in touch with me in order to surrender a dog she felt she could not keep. Days later, after numerous teary telephone conversations and one in-person meeting, I got the dog. What did she get? Jesus Christ. She accepted him as Lord and Savior through the move of the Holy Spirit - through Walk by Faith Rescue, a perfect example of marketplace ministry.  Please do not miss your opportunities.

Wherever you are, whatever you do, if God has positioned you there, He has a purpose for you. You can come home at the end of the day with a paycheck and personal success, or you can reap the rewards of knowing you spent the day serving Jesus Christ.  Marketplace Ministry. Check it out. Begin today.

Walk by Faith Rescue specializes in cases requiring miracles - severe abuse & neglect, disabilities, death-row dogs, special needs & dogs that everyone has given up on. Faith Rescue believes in miracles and is privileged to serve. They are a small Christian ministry with BIG faith - serving the Lord and His 2- and 4-legged creations. Please note they DO NOT currently adopt out of the area, and hope you will use www.petfinder.com to adopt in your area. They do their best to help make the best possible matches between dogs and families. They do not operate on a first come, first served basis. They do not do same-day adoptions. All of this is in an effort to help create the best possible matches.

A note from Mark Gunderman about those prayer groups Lara mentioned:

Definition of market place leaders/ministers: Believers who are leaders in business, ministries government, education, media and the arts who share our vision and mission and who have a passion to pray for our community.  These market place leaders (ministers) function as equal partners together with local ministers, working together as one, with a passion to transform and impact society through their spheres of influence.

Prayer Purcellville: Every Tuesday at 8:00 to 9:00 am at the Purcellville Train Station. 12 folks are participating weekly to include 6 pastors and some business leaders and
reps from Intercessors for America and Breakthrough Prayer Ministries. Intercessors is a
non-profit Christian ministry founded in 1973 which serves the Church of Jesus Christ by encouraging effective prayer and fasting for the Church, our nation, and our leaders. Breakthrough is a non-denominational, non-profit, evangelical ministry processing over a hundred thousand prayer requests annually. These requests go to a network of nearly 4,000 intercessors who pray individually and faithfully for each request.  Their prayer family extends into nearly eighty countries worldwide. Jack Stagman at 540-338-0409, Jami or Dave Dittmeier at 540-338-5380 heads this group.

Pray Leesburg: Every Wednesday 8:00 to 9 am at Thomas Balch Library in the basement at 208 West Market Street. Go in the back entrance and into the basement.  Pastors Chip Giessler and Lyman Eddy head this group.

Pray Ashburn: Every Thursday from noon to 1 pm at the offices of Good Shepherd Alliance at 20684 Ashburn Road. Pastors Jeff Good, Jeff Jacob and Clancy Nixon head this group. The Ashburn group has 6 to 8 pastors and layman participating weekly in the chapel/conference room at the Good Shepherd Alliance Center of Hope.  The group plans to initiate pray walks within the streets of Ashburn Village.

There has been discussion about prayer groups being established in Lovettsville and Sterling.
