Cornerstone Chapel Hosts 3rd Annual Homeless Christmas

The Cornerstone Chapel Ministry in Leesburg in partnership with the Good Shepherd Alliance (GSA) Homeless Shelters, hosted their third annual Homeless Christmas Dinner on Sunday,
December 7. Seven mothers and 13 children along with GSA board members and staff were invited to a Christmas meal and gift giving on Sunday evening. A dinner of turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, buttered roles and cranberry sauce along with pumpkin and apple pie was served by the Cornerstone Chapel Middle School Youth Group. The 19 middle school student’s served a buffet type dinner, and then waited on tables where homeless residents, GSA staff and board members all dinned together. The dinner started and ended with a prayer requesting Our Lord’s protection for the children, their mothers and the homeless facilities which serve them.
Each homeless child received two toys and mom’s received gift certificates to help lessen their financial burden during the Christmas season. The children were permitted to open their presents after dinner. I personally experienced the joy of watching those kids’ eyes, wild with excitement; quickly tear off the wrapping paper to catch a glimpse of what glorious gift lay in their own hands. Cornerstone Chapel also provided GSA with additional gift certificates for other homeless families who could not attend the Christmas Dinner.

The GSA manages three shelters in Loudoun; a family shelter near Arcola, Mary’s House of Hope for pregnant women in Purcellville and Hebron a refuge for women and children near Lucketts. The GSA is headquartered at the Center of Hope facility in Ashburn Village.
The GSA is thankful for local area Churches like Cornerstone Chapel that reach out and assist the homeless and destitute all year round to include the holidays. Churches like Cornerstone are finding that formal partnerships with their local homeless shelters, Chamber of Commerce, food bank, community thrift shop or public school can make a much more powerful impact on the un-churched than they ever could alone. Successful partners complement each other, overcoming weaknesses and highlighting strengths. Cornerstone Chapel is a ministry that has succeeded in building community partnerships and their example can assist other Churches to discover how your church and a local organization can be made better working together. God’s grace is great.
Cornerstone Chapel is a congregation of approximately 3,500 people and is located across from the Leesburg Airport and easily reached from U.S. Route 15, State Route 7, and the Dulles Greenway (Route 267). The Cornerstone Chapel web page is located at www.cornerstonechapel.net.
